Welcome to my new blog, Lunar Kitchen! I wanted to do an introduction post to share the reason behind the name and why I’ve started this blog.
Gotta eat
I’ve always loved cooking and trying new recipes. I like to balance the type of meals I make. I can spend hours preparing a dish, carefully reading recipe instructions only to actually spend 5 minutes eating the meal. I’m the type to get a sweet tooth and instead of going to the store to buy some cookies, I’ll find a one-bowl recipe for cookies that are ready in 15 minutes. But, I am also quick to put together simple meals from pantry staples and fridge scraps, making sure I’ve made enough for lunch the next day.
The kitchen is my comfort zone. It’s the time I can step away from a laptop screen or phone screen and focus on the meal at hand. Most importantly, it’s a nourishing, useful hobby because you gotta eat!
I started my Instagram account for Lunar Kitchen at the beginning of 2020. In pre-pandemic times, I’d have coworkers ask me what I brought for lunch today because it looked good. My family would ask what I was making for dinner. My Instagram account was a passion project. It was a way to personally document the different meals I made and in the first two years, I created over 100 posts and a couple of videos of my meals.
At the 2021, I started thinking more about what I wanted Lunar Kitchen to be. I followed plenty of cooking blogs, cooking Instagram accounts, and Pinterest recipes. I’d tried enough recipes to add my own spin or pull together a couple techniques into something new without needing a recipe reference. I figured my take on cooking could have a space on the internet too.
See new places
Cooking is one of my hobbies, but my other hobbies include traveling. My husband and I have a goal to visit at least one new place each year and we always make it happen. We’ve traveled to over 10 countries together, with our favorites being Spain, Colombia, and Japan. We’ve also visited over 10 National Parks in the U.S. and hope to see them all in our lifetime.
Often, friends and family will reach out to me to ask for travel itineraries or how to plan a trip. I’m an extensive planner and have created a system over the years for planning 2 week international trips, extended weekend hiking trips, or a last minute weekend trip.
I always have a next trip I’m looking forward to. Travel is a top priority in my life and we make it happen by making it a priority to save. I strongly believe travel does good for the soul. It’s a recharge to see somewhere new. Travel doesn’t have to be an international trip, it can be a roadtrip to another state or day trip to a nearby city. The biggest way we save is by cooking a lot of our meals at home.
Design everything
I’m a full-time designer outside of this blog. I got my first copy of Photoshop in middle school and have loved design ever since. I started an Etsy store, Lunar Makes, in 2021 as a creative outlet to share enamel pins, stickers, or other crafts that I make. The designs are usually of food or places I’ve been.
My design eye transcended into an interest in interior design. My husband and I bought a home 5 years ago and we’ve slowly decorated over the years. I try to be intentional with how pieces fit together in a room and am the type to hold off on putting holes in the wall to hang an art piece. We have remodeled almost every inch of our home, with our largest project being remodeling our original ’70s kitchen. Our next project will be remodeling 2 bathrooms.
I also love clothing. I love to buy new and vintage clothing, visiting estate sales on the weekends or thrift stores to find unique finds. I try to be sustainable by selling old clothes or vintage finds on Mercari or Poshmark. In the future, I’d love to start my own vintage store with all the cool finds I come across.
Lunar Kitchen blog
The name Lunar Kitchen fits all of my interests. Food, travel, design, they all feed into each other. I have a lot to share about these topics and I decided to put all of this info in a centralized place, a blog!
My goal for Lunar Kitchen is be a blog for sharing. Sharing food I make, sharing travel tips, and sharing design finds. It’s a place for anything else I think would be useful to share with others.
I’ve always wanted to start a new blog and I’m diving in. It’s another passion project, where I won’t put a ton of pressure on it, and maybe something will come of it.
I hope you’ll find the information useful and a place you can come to again for new learnings. Thank you for following my journey!
